Module 1: Introduction to Technology Transfer

Subtitle: Technology Transfer – Part 1 of 6

This opening module lays the foundation for understanding what technology transfer is, why it matters, and how it operates within innovation-driven economies. Participants will explore the basic terminology, stakeholder ecosystems, and strategic motivations behind moving technologies from research and development into markets, businesses, and society.

The module introduces real-world challenges of transferring innovations across organizational, cultural, and national boundaries. It also highlights Germany’s model of structured technology transfer, including insights from the Stuttgart–Tübingen innovation cluster and global cooperation networks.

Participants will reflect on the internal and external barriers to transfer—ranging from organizational readiness to global market constraints—and will be introduced to future-focused themes like digital transformation, sustainability, and the Green IMLead® approach to integrated management.

Key Topics Covered:

  • Definition and Purpose of Technology Transfer
Understand why and how knowledge, inventions, and innovation move between research institutions and the market.

  • Internal vs. External Transfer Barriers
Explore the main factors that hinder or support successful transfer processes.

  • Stakeholders and Structures
Identify key actors involved in the transfer ecosystem, including universities, companies, intermediaries, and policymakers.

  • Digitalization and Sustainability Trends
Learn how emerging trends like green technology, AI, and digital business models are shaping transfer strategies.

  • Global Perspectives and Regional Best Practices
Case insights from Germany and Asia, with a focus on international cooperation and local innovation hubs.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this module, participants will be able to:

  • Define the role and importance of technology transfer

  • Distinguish between formal and informal transfer pathways

  • Identify main actors and structures in the transfer ecosystem

  • Analyze challenges related to internal limitations and external environments

  • Connect transfer activities with sustainability, digitalization, and international growth

This module prepares learners to understand the strategic role of technology transfer as a bridge between invention and impact—locally and globally.
